Earliest Known Americans Lived On Seaweed Diet
May 9, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - According to a new study at the Monte Verde archaeological site in southern Chile, the earliest known Americans lived on a diet which consisted of seaweed.
The study of the earliest known human settlement revealed that, 14,000 years ago, early migrants moved down the Pacific Coast.
An extremely interesting discovery is that the researchers identified nine different species of seaweed and algae at the site. The seaweed samples dated between 14,220 and 13,980 years old.
This was a bit of a surprise since at the time, Monte Verde was about 50 miles from the sea, and 10 miles from a large marine bay.
The dating of the seaweed confirms that there were settlers there 1,000 years earlier than previously thought, making them the earliest human settlers in the Americas.
The lead researcher, Prof. Tom Dillehay of Vanderbilt University stated he was surprised of the new species of seaweed and algae they found.
He called the settlers “beachcombers.” They were frequently in contact with the coast, using it for resources.
