Study Shows Sahara Went From Green To Desert Gradually
May 11, 2008
Los Angeles (dbTechno) - According to a new study, the Sahara desert formed 2,700 years ago after a gradual progression away from green, and towards hot desert.
According to the new study, the Sahara was filled with green trees, lakes, and more around 6,000 years ago.
Things changed over time in Africa though according to a study by a team of scientists from the U.S., Europe, and Canada.
They studied layers of sediment in one of the largest remaining Sahara lakes to try and figure out its history.
The lake they studies, Yoa, allowed them to go back in time into what the Sahara used to be, and how it formed.
Through soil tests and other biological indicators, they found that the Sahara desert moved very gradually away from green.
This goes against a past study carried out by Peter de Menocal of Columbia University. That 2000 study stated that the Sahara region shifted from green to desert rapidly.
