Baby Crocodiles Talk To Mother From Within Their Eggs

June 24, 2008

According to new research, baby crocodiles actually talk to their mothers, as well as their siblings in other eggs before they actually hatch.Boston (dbTechno) - According to new research, baby crocodiles actually talk to their mothers, as well as their siblings in other eggs before they actually hatch.

Researchers believe that baby crocodiles may talk to their mothers to state when they are ready to come out of the egg and fully hatch.

The discovery was made by French scientists Amelie Vergne and Nicolas Mathevon of the University Jean Monnet in Saint-Etienne.

They noticed while looking at crocodile eggs that noises were coming out of them.

The noises came just before the baby crocodile burst out of the shell.

For their study, they tested out ten different sets of crocodile eggs, and split them in 3 groups.

The first group was played recordings of crocodile noises before hatching. The second group was played different noises, and the third group had no noise.

They found that the eggs which were in the group with the real crocodile noises hatched almost immediately, whlie the other groups did not hatch for hours later.

It was also noted that the crocodile mothers responded to the real noises.

The study has been published in the journal Current Biology.
