Boston (dbTechno) – According to researchers, a 2,100-year-old early computer they found in a shipwreck in Rome was likely used as a calendar for the Olympic Games.
The report has been published in the journal Nature, and was carried out by researchers.
The device is known as the Antikythera Mechanism, and has puzzled scientists ever since it was originally found back in 1901. The device itself is made up of bronze gears as well as dials.
Researchers have long believed that it was some type of clock, and this new finding has backed that up to an extent.
What they have managed to find was that one of the dials on the actual device was used to record the dates of the ancient Olympic Games.
In order to make this discovery, researchers turned to X-ray computer tomography, giving them a 3D look at the gears of the device.
Researchers were also able to find the name of each of the 12 months on there as well.
This is an amazing find to say the least, and quite a way for the world to remember when it was time for the Olympics.
