Washington (dbTechno) – According to a new survey of the 5,487 mammal species in the world, one in four, or 25% of them face extinction.
Over the course of the past five years, a survey has been conducted on the mammal species around the world.
The survey was carried out by Jan Schipper of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), as well as 1,700 other colleagues.
What researchers found is pretty startling to say the least, as many of the mammal species face imminent extinction.
They found that there are 1,139 mammal species around the world that face extinction.
They also found that the overall population of 52% of all of the mammal species is in decline.
Mammals who are most at danger are found in South, as well as Southeast Asia.
Many in South America, as well as Africa and the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans face grave danger as well.
The report comes as the conference on biodiversity kicks off this week, held by the IUCN.
