Scientists Sequence Genome Of Extinct Wooly Mammoth
November 20, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Scientists have come out and stated that they have managed to sequence the genome of the extinct wooly mammoth.
Scientists were able to use DNA found from its hair to be able to sequence the genome.
What they found was that the wooly mammoth is actually closely related to modern elephants. They are also discovering more and more information as to why they may have become extinct.
The wooly mammoths became extinct around 10,000 years ago and evolved very slowly.
The genome is said to be 80% complete and shows the wooly mammoths plit into two groups 2 millioin years ago.
They eventually became very different in terms of genetic, with one becoming extinct while the other surviving until 10,000 years ago.
This new research shows it may be possible to sequence the genomes of other extinct animals.
