ISSCR Slams Rogue Stem Cell Clinics, Unsafe Treatments
December 4, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) has come out and slammed what are being called rogue clinics which sell unsafe stem cell therapies to patients who are critically ill.
Stem cell research is still in a form where it is beginning to develop, and could yield major health benefits down the road.
There have been some major improvements in stem cell research just over the past couple of years, with hopes that it could cure diseases in the future that right now have very few treatments.
The ISSCR though has put out a new report which has revealed that there are many stem cell clinics advertising stem cell therapy, which may be unsafe.
They use advertising on the Internet and in other mediums to attract seriously ill patients who pay big money for these treatments.
A lot of the therapies being used by these rogue clinics though are not final yet, and are still pretty much in the experimental stage.
FOr this reason, the ISSCR has put out new guidelines that they have published for the clinical use of stem cells.
The hope is that with these guidelines, they can better protect patients from these clinics.
The paper has been published in the journal Cell Stem Cell.
