The study was led by Nikhil Dhurandhar from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

They focused their research on a various known as AD-36, as they believed it played a major role in obesity.

When looking at obese people, they found that over 30% of them actually had this highly contagious virus.

This compared to only 11% of people who were said to be at a normal weight level.

The virus can cause the body to gain weight for months at a time before it can actually fight the bug.

The virus gets into the lungs and the rest of the body, causing fat cells to multiply.

The belief is that this could be one reason as to why some overweight people experience a sudden gain in weight.

That’s right, it’s not your fault! The Big Mac, chips, fries, coke and ice cream had nothing to do with it.

    Almost Totally Inconclusive, and Misleading

First off, the title of the piece indicates that Obesity itself, is caused by a virus. This isn’t even the outcome of the study, as the article discusses. The virus may be responsible for sudden weight gain in obese people.

Second, being present in 30% of Obese people indicates that it is not a significant cause of weight gain. It’s presence in 11% of normal weight persons supports this strongly.

The real reason people are obese is that they get too little exercise, eat too much, don’t smoke enough, and keep listening to misrepresented or bad science that erroneously claiming that obesity is a virus.

I agree that this sounds a little stupid, but I am obese and I think that people who say getting too little exercise, eating too much (such as a Big Mac) are, in my opinion, a little ignorant. When I was about 6 years old I broke my leg and soon after started to gain weight. I rode my bike a lot before and resumed right after my leg healed, but the weight kept coming on. My legs and arms are normal, but my mid-section is fat. I eat healthy, exercise, and aside from the occasional beer that would be about it. I have checked how many calories I eat in a day and I usually eat around 2100. That certainly doesn’t equate to 270 lbs. The only way I lose weight is if I cut out carbs practically entirely from my diet. I don’t like junk food or sweets and only drink water, and as I said the occasional beer. So explain to me why I am obese. I have had my thyroid checked, hormones (which are a little off but in range), and many other things. So your theories of people not exercising enough, or eating too much junk food DO NOT count for every obese person out there. Don’t be ignorant, think before you speak.
