Scientists Finish Decoding Genome Sequence Of Cows
April 26, 2009
Washington (dbTechno) - Scientists have confirmed that they have managed to finish decoding the genome sequence of cows, which could lead to a variety of things, including new ways to develop better meat.
Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine and the U.S. Agricultural Research Service have been working to unravel the genome sequence of cows, and have been very successful in doing so.
Upon finishing the genome sequence, they have made some very interesting discoveries to say the least.
What they have found is that the cow genomes are very similar to those of humans.
In fat, we share 80% of the 22,000 genes that they found within cows.
This means that cows are more similar to humans genetically than even mice or rats.
So what does this mean in the long run in terms of advancements in science and medicine?
Firstly, it could mean that cows may be better subjects to test out human health rather than lab mice and such.
Secondly, it could also lead to the development of higher quality meat, and a better understanding of how to raise cows.
This is a landmark study which will lead to some great things down the road.
The study was published in the journal Science.
