From the very first iPhone to the most recent model, the 4s, Apple has used a 3.5 inch screen without fail.
As the popularity of smartphones grows, other manufacturers have increased the size of the screen, all the way up to a 5.3 inch screen on the Samsung Note.
Rumor has it that Apple is conceding to smartphone users who want a larger screen with the iPhone 5, which will have a 4 inch screen.
An increase in screen size from the current 3.5-inch display to 4-inches would mean an overall increase in viewing area of roughly 30 percent.
Reportedly, suppliers of cell phone display glass are going to start providing Apple with the 4 inch screens next month, which fits into the speculative timeline that the new model will be released in the fall of 2012.
The production of iPhone 5 reportedly begins in June, while it will come out in fall, as predicted by analysts.
Apple is hoping this new model will appeal to those who want a larger screen for surfing the web, but a still relatively small device for keeping in a pocket or small purse.
