Harvard & MIT Scientists Invent Real “Star Wars” Lightsaber

A joint project between researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University has announced a real-life light saber akin to the type famously used in the “Star Wars” movies.

“It’s not an in-apt analogy to compare this to light sabers,” Dr. Mikhail Lukin, a professor of physics at Harvard and one of the scientists behind the new discovery, said in a written statement. “When these photons interact with each other, they’re pushing against and deflect each other. The physics of what’s happening in these molecules is similar to what we see in the movies.”

A typical laser will focus a ray which cannot be contained within a small space as the movie light sabers have been shown to do. However, the researchers have discovered photonic matter which they claim allows molecules to be bound within a confined space. In short, they used this photonic matter to harness a real laser beam which they say looks like the movie version and can be even engage in binding similar to the movie.

So are these light sabers capable of removing limbs or severing human bodies? Not so fast, Rodriguez.

“What we have done is create a special type of medium in which photons interact with each other so strongly that they begin to act as though they have mass, and they bind together to form molecules,” Lukin said in the statement. “This type of photonic bound state has been discussed theoretically for quite a while, but until now it hadn’t been observed.”

No word was given as to whether these real-life light sabers are actually “weaponized”. Also, there’s no word yet as to what form this technology would take in a retail version if it ever comes to that.

For now, the researchers are convinced that their discovery has opened new doors in the field of quantum computing because prior to their findings, the study was based on the presumption that the molecules were non-interactive.
