Odds Of Asteroid Hitting Mars Increase
January 2, 2008
Houston (dbTechno) - The odds of a huge asteroid hitting Mars next month have increased according to scientists.
Scientists have stated that the asteroid, which is about the size of a football field, has a better chance than ever of hitting Mars, but it is still not likely. The probability has been increased to 4%.
Many researchers are actually hoping that the asteroid does hit Mars so that they can study it. Don Yeomans, head of Near-Earth Object Program at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab stated “I think it’ll be cool. Usually when an asteroid is headed toward Earth, I’m not rooting for an impact.”
The asteroid is known as the nondescript 2007 WD5.
Scientists stated there was a 1-in-75 chance that the asteroid could hit Mars on January 30th. This has increased greatly though to a 1-in-25 chance after the asteroid was looked at more closely.
The asteroid is moving at 27,900 mph towards Mars and poses no threat to Earth.
