It was the first time in 30 years NASA did a flyby of Mercury, and volcanic activity was found.

The photos NASA revealed showed a great deal of volcanic activity, as well as signs that the planet was absolutely hammered with asteroids.

Craters were seen, reaching up to 100 feet (30 meters) across or bigger from asteroids.

There were many, what NASA is calling spider-shaped formations showing cracks on the planet from all of the activity.

Cameras managed to take 1,213 images of Mercury, revealing another 30% of the planet to the world.

Sean Solomon, MESSENGER’s principal investigator, stated that they were “surprised.” He stated “IT was not the planet we expected, it was not like the moon. It’s a very dynamic planet with an awful lot going on.”
