Hubble Telescope Finds Signs of Life On Distant Planet
March 20, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - The Hubble Space Telescope made an absolutely historic discovery when it was looking at a planet from a distant solar system. They found, for the first time, an organic molecule in the atmosphere of the Jupiter-sized planet, proving water and methane existed.
The planet is 63 light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula called HD 189733b.
The lead author of the paper set to appear in the journal Nature, Mark Swain, stated this is a major step forward in finding life.
This discovery marks the first time ever that they may be able pinpoint where molecules, and life, could exist on another planet.
The planet itself is currently way to hot to sustain life, as it comes in at 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit.
What they found though, methane molecules, means that there is water, methane, and other substances already on the planet and in the atmosphere.
Swain called the discovery a “crucial stepping stone to eventually characterizing pre-biotic molecules on planets where life could exist.”
The gas methan can be a sign of life forming, and researchers hope it continues.
