April 21, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Vietnam launched its first satellite, Vinasat-1, over the weekend into space. The satellite will be used to provide telecommunications, broadcasting, as well as Internet all over Vietnam.
Vinasat-1 was launched into space on the back of an Ariane 5 rocket.
It launched from the European spaceport in French Guriana. The launch took place at 10:17 GMT on Friday evening.
The satellite will support telecommunications links and should reap economic benefits for Vietnam.
The satellite has the capability to transmit “10,000 voice, Internet and data channels, or 120 TV channels,” according to Vietnam’s minister of Information and Communication Doan Hop Le.
He stated “Vinasat-1 will help Vietnam bring telecommunications, Internet and television services to all isolated, mountainous and island areas where other means of transmission is not feasible.”
The satellite was built by Lockheed Martin and has a design lifetime of 15 years.
