New Study Shows Water On Mars Too Salty For Life
May 30, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - A new study has been released which states the water which was once on Mars would have been too salty to sustain life. This comes as NASA continues the 3-month mission with Phoenix to dig through the soil and ice to try and see if life could have existed.
Scientists from Harvard University in Massachusetts as well as Stony Brook University put out the study after they looked over salt deposits from a rock that was gathered by the NASA Mars rover, Opportunity.
They found in their data that water once did exist on Mars, but that the water was likely far too salty to sustain life of any kind.
Researchers concluded that the water was on Mars a few billion years ago, but in one region on Mars, at least, life coudl not be sustained.
The region on Mars is known as Meridiani Planum, and is where the Mars rover landed.
The study has been published in the latest issue of the journal Science.
