NASA Confirms There Is Ice On Mars, First Sample Taken
July 31, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - NASA scientists announced today that they have taken the first ice sample on Mars. This comes on the same day that NASA announced that the Phoenix Mars mission would be extended by five weeks.
NASA scientists confirmed earlier in the week that they were not going to actually carry out the ice test, due to the fact that they have been having problems with actually getting the samples into the test oven of the Phoenix.
The problem scientists were having was that the ice samples were getting stuck to the back of the robotic arm’s shovel.
To change things up, scientists ordered the Phoenix to gather a dry soil sample on Wednesday.
What they found was that after the soil sample was placed into the ovens, the soil actually contained a sample of ice.
Needless to say, NASA scientists are all smiles after this major discovery.
Scientists have been working around the clock to try and get the first ice samples into the test oven, and managed to do so by chance.
From this point forward, they will be using the ovens to run further tests on the oils ample.
Again, this comes on the same exact day that NASA announced that the Phoenix Mars mission would be extended to late September.
