July 31, 2008

NASA has announced that they are extending the mission of the Phoenix Mars Lander, giving it more time to search for water, and other evidence that the red planet could support life.Boston (dbTechno) - NASA has announced that they are extending the mission of the Phoenix Mars Lander, giving it more time to search for water, and other evidence that the red planet could support life.

The Phoenix Mars mission has been ongoing for the past two months, and has been a major success to this point.

The Phoenix Lander began its journey after touching down on Mars back on May 25th.

Originally, the mission was set to last three months, but has officially been extended through September.

NASA Chief Scientist Michael Meyer announced at a press conference in Tucson, Arizona that the mission is being extended.

During the newly extended mission, Phoenix will be digging and looking into two more trenches on the red planet.

The hope is that the added time on the red planet will reveal a great deal of added information in regards to the minerals, make-up, seasons, etc.

Thus far, the Phoenix Lander has managed to find ice and minerals which have led many to believe that Mars could support life.
