Scientists Believe There Is Ice on Mars Surface
June 1, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - The team of scientists that are reviewing the pictures sent from NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander are beginning to think that the ground directly below the Lander was moved by the thrusters and has revealed a hard thick substance that could be ice. The robotic arm camera also reveale that the ground had smooth and level surfaces, also consistent with an icy layer.
While they add that there is a chance that it could be something entirely different, the interpretation to this point is that it is ice. Mars is primarily a vast desert type environment and though there have been minerals that were found previously that suggests that water was present at one time, only minimal water exists there now, and even that is in certain circumstances. Because water is necessary for life, NASA takes a “follow the water” approach when investigating Mars’ surface to learn as much as they can about past inhabitation of the planet.
