X-Men Origins Wolverine
PS3 Review
Publisher: Activision
Developer: Raven Software
Released: May 2009
Activision and Raven Software have brought us the latest X-Men movie in video game form with X-Men Origins Wolverine on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
The game and movie are based on the Marvel comic character Wolverine, with the game being a third-person action adventure title that you will not soon forget.
I have to say right off the bat, that the usual premise is that if a game is based on a movie, it will flat out suck.
That is absolutely not the case though here, as X-Men Origins Wolverine is a quality third-person action adventure, and is one that fans of games such as God of War will surely enjoy.
The game is an absolute blast to play, following the basic plot of the new hit movie, looking at the past of Wolverine.
The way in which the whole game plays out intertwines with the movie nicely, as you get to live through all of the action.
The great thing about all of this though is that the game itself is so enjoyable, that you do not even have to be a fan of X-Men to have fun with this one.
The game kicks off fast and hits the ground running with a combat system which is easy to pick up, and has enough depth that you will not feel things get too repetitive.
The way in which the whole game is paced is to try and keep action fans interested, never allowing them to let their guard down.
At its core this is a hack-n-slash affair, but as stated there is enough depth and special attacks that the combat stays fresh throughout, even when dealing with some of the tougher enemies.
Beyond the action, there is some strategy to this one, such as his ability to solve puzzles, as well as to heal himself by balancing the health and adrenaline meters.
Balance everything out perfectly and you will find yourself taking advantage of things such as the rage meter to really do some serious damage.
In terms of longevity, the main game itself is not all that deep as it is something that will not take too long to play through, but there have been additions here such as things for you to unlock, special power-ups to attain, and other factors to keep you coming back.
Visually, this is one impressive-looking games with a great variety in terms of locales shown off by the developers, with plenty of detail and strong texture-work going into it. Mix that with the smooth animations and you have the makings for a beautiful game.
Raven Software has done a fantastic job with this game on the PS3, as it will not only appeal to X-Men fans, but any action fan out there. This is a strong title that surpassed anything I could have expected, definitely recommended for action fans!
Graphics: 8.2
A very good-looking game with plenty of little details and smooth animations.Audio: 8.0
The audio is not quite as impressive as the visuals but gets the job done, cool sound effects.Gameplay: 8.5
Things can get a tad repetitive over time, but fro the most part the developer has done a great job to make this a blast to play.Replay Value: 7.5
The game is not quite as long as it could be, but is still a fairly deep experience thanks to the unlockable stuff.Final Score: 8.2
