Hundreds of thousands stormed the streets on Monday night to be the first to be there at 12:01 a.m. on September 25th to pick up their copy of Halo 3.

Microsoft is hoping that Halo 3 will be such a success that not only every current Xbox 360 owner picks up a copy, but that it attracts new buyers to the Xbox 360 console as well.

Halo 2 managed to take in $125 million during its first 24 hours of release on the original Xbox.

The Xbox 360 Halo 3 is expected to do over $300 million when it is all said and done. The game shipped in a regular edition for $59.99, a collector’s edition for $69.99, and a legendary edition for $129.99 which came with a replica Spartan helmet.

There was also the release of the Halo 3 edition Xbox 360 for $399.99. Microsoft has all of the Halo pieces in place and is hoping to score big this holiday season as they look to regain the lead over the Wii and grow the lead they currently have over the Sony PS3.
