Boston (dbTechno) – MoveOn.org has launched a petition and ad campaign against Facebook’s brand new “Beacon” program which, according to many violates user privacy.
Facebook Beacom launched not too long ago and is a marketing service which has marketers basically publish what you purchase as a story. If you buy something through the merchants, that story will be published in the Facebook News Feeds.
Facebook stated that “actions include purchasing a product, signing up for a service, adding an item to a wish list, and more. When a user performs the action, they will be alerted that your website is sending a story to their profile.”
Many users are not happy as entire holiday Christmas lists and more are beginning to pop up as news stories on Facebook, a violation of user privacy in the eyes of many.
MoveOn.org stated that users are signed up to this automatically and need to opt out to be free of any such promotional reports.
The ad campaign is called “Stop Invading My Privacy.” The petition is calling for a stop to the Facebook Beacon program, “Facebook must respect my privacy. They should not tell my friends what I buy on other sites – or let companies use my name to endorse their products – without my explicit permission.”
