Boston (dbTechno) – According to reports US Magistrate Judge Stephen Crocker has ordered the Feds to stay away from Amazon.
Amazon has been accused by Feds of denying requests by prosecutors to release records for users who bought certain books at the online retail location.
This is a huge win for the consumer as Amazon has been fighting to keep their customers’ identities private.
The judge stated “The subpoena’s chilling effect on expressive e-commerce would frost keyboards across America.”
Prosecutors demanded that Amazon release some 24,000 transaction records.
They are trying to convict a city official on charges of fraud and tax evasion.
The Feds managed to find the information they needed on the official’s personal computer so Amazon was not even needed. It is key to note though that the judge siding with Amazon, and Amazon standing by their customers, is a good sign for future privacy rights of online consumers.
