Sony PS3 Makes Up Majority of Blu-ray Player Sales

The Blu-ray disc association has revealed that there are now 3.5 million Blu-ray players in homes that have been sold to date, and 3 million of those are Sony PS3 gaming consoles.Las Vegas (dbTechno) – The Blu-ray Disc Association has revealed that there are now 3.5 million Blu-ray players in homes that have been sold to date, and 3 million of those are Sony PS3 gaming consoles.

The announcement from the Blu-ray disc association came at CES 2008 in Las Vegas. Spokespersons for the Blu-ray Disc Association came out and stated that there are 3.5 million Blu-ray players which have been sold to date.

500,000 of these Blu-ray players are standalone players, while the remaining 3 million Blu-ray players are actually PS3 consoles from Sony.

The Blu-ray Disc Association has come out and stated that they expect sales increases to continue with Blu-ray sales to skyrocket in 2008. They expect a total installed-base for Blu-ray players of 10 million by the end of 2008.

It looks as if the format war between the Blu-ray Disc Association and the HD DVD format is coming to an end as Blu-ray continues to get exclusive deals with major movie studios, while the HD DVD format continues to lose out on many such deals.

  • anyone predicting the end of hd dvd based on the sales of a gaming console isn’t doing their job. that means you, author. it’s odd the only one’s claiming the “end fo the format war” are bluray zealouts…. with less than 2% penetration… it reeks of desperation…. nothing more. This war is a loooong way from being over, and bluray can’t survive on gaming console that is losing the console war by millions. sorry.
