Earlier this year, one of the most unique and enjoyable cartoons in a long time hit the Cartoon Network, Storm Hawks. Storm Hawks, for those who have never seen it, is an extremely enjoyable cartoon that is entertaining, action-packed, and puts forth some great-looking animation.
The show follows a group of teenagers who form a fighting squadron known as the Storm Hawks. These teenagers are not your typical kids though, as they end up saving the world of Atmos one day at a time.
The Storm Hawks are led by Aerrow, who is always out to prove himself and make a statement. He has his team with him as well who all add in varying styles including some humor, action, etc.
This show is geared for kids, but even as an adult myself I found that it was a great viewing experience from start to finish in every episode. The idea behind the show is that these kids fight all of the odds to be successful as the Storm Hawks, and make a difference in the world.
They of course have to go toe to toe with some serious bad guys. The main villain in the show is Master Cyclonis, a spider-looking creature. There is also a villain known as The Dark Ace.
Storm Hawks: Tales From The Atmos features a lot more action than the Hawks Rise Again release, and has four main episodes as well as a bonus episode.
These include…
- Best Friends Forever
- The Black Gorge
- Absolute Power
- Velocity
- Fire and Ice (Bonus Episode)
The video quality for this release is very impressive as the animation of the show is unique and extremely artistic. Characters have a very unique style to them, as does the entire show. The style of the cartoon gives it a very Western feel, but in a good way. The colors are crisp and have a lot of pop coming off of the screen. Another huge plus is that the episodes are presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital and comes across pretty solid making good use of the center channel for clear and crisp presentation of the dialogue and action. The show is only available in English, but subtitles are available in English and Spanish.
In terms of special extras for the release, one huge thing that is packed into the release is an exclusive mini-comic. There is also the bonus episode already mentioned above. On top of these two things there is a special feature which focuses on the Cyclonians, giving fans of the show more background information.
Storm Hawks: Tales From The Atmos is a great DVD release for a great cartoon. The release has more action in the episodes than the Hawks Rise Again release, and is priced to sell at well under $20. The show is great for kids as it promotes good morals as well as some amazing enjoyment with action, comedy, and more. Adults will likely truly enjoy this as well. Storm Hawks is a release on DVD you simply cannot pass up!
Episodes: 9.0 A great set of episodes with plenty of action and entertainment.
Video: 8.5 The animation looks great on DVD with solid colors and a clear video transfer.
Audio: 8.0 The audio quality sounds good as the music, special effects, and voices all come across well in Dolby Digital.
Special Features: 8.0 The packed-in mini-comic is a nice bonus, as is the bonus episode and feature on the Cyclonians.
Final Score: 8.5
