Boston (dbTechno) – The One Laptop Per Child project has unveiled a brand new $75 laptop known as the XO2, with a design that makes it look very similar to a tablet PC, or an electronic book.
The founder of OLPC, Nicholas Negroponte, unveiled the new XO2 laptop for the world to see at an event which was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The XO2 laptop will receive a price cut, selling for $75, and is expected to launch in 2010.
This new laptop gets rid of the old keyboard, and instead adds on a single, unified display. The device gets split up into two touch-screens that can be used as a book, a laptop with keyboard, etc.
The concept behind it is that many kids could use it at once to look at information and such for school and furthering their education.
It will be promoted to start as an e-book reader, being able to hold over 500 e-books, but it can do much more.
As of right now, the OLPC has sold around 600,000 laptops, with 400,000 orders expected within the next few months.
This is still behind the target of 100 million laptops by 2008.
