Hardware Review

We have had our fair share of portable scanners to test out, but none which can really stand up to what the PLANon DocuPen RC800 Pen Scanner can do. We have had the opportunity to test out this scanner for about a month now, and we have the full and final review for you all to read. This is one tool you may not want to skip out on, as it is one effective and innovative gadget.

We will start out with the basics as to what you actually get in the box. The box comes with the DocuPen Portable Color Scanner, as well as the USB Cable, CD-ROM installation disc, included software, and a nice leather case.

There are some great features to the scanner itself, such as the incredible battery life it has. The battery is fully rechargeable and holds a charge for a very long time. We used the scanner several times without having to charge it once. Charging is easy enough as that can all be done via the USB cable.

There is also 8MB of internal Flash memory included in the scanner, allowing you to scan pages and such, and then keep them stored right on the scanner until you transfer them to your computer. The option is also there for a MicroSD memory card to be added in, which we did. We put in a 256mb card and have yet to fill it up with plenty of space to hold scans.

The other great feature of the scanner is how simple and light it really is. It takes no effort at all to throw this in its leather case and put it away in a computer bag, purse, briefcase, etc.

Beyond all of the cool features it has, the only thing that really matters is how it performs, and this scans very nicely. There is an easy way to switch between the scanning modes, which include color, black/white, photo, and various low and high resolutions. You can rotate the modes simply with the push of a button on the scanner, easy as that.

Scanning documents is extremely easy as the scanner actually guides you through it as you go. If you are going to fast, you will see a red X flash so that you know you have to slow down, a great feature to say the least.

There are a few cons to the device though, as not is all perfect with it. The first thing to note is that it does not perform that well when scanning books, as it works best with flat paper such as a magazine article, letter, etc. The crease of the book hurts the scan overall.

In terms of quality, the scans look great when you use color with the high-resolution setting. In most cases we just found it easy to use black and white.

The only trick to the scanner which may take a bit of getting used to is to not scan the page at an angle when you are using it, since it is all done with your hand.

Beyond that though, the scanner works extremely well for what its meant to be. You have the ability to scan a page in around 5 to 10 seconds, and transferring them to a computer is as easy as hooking it up to a USB cable.

The included software is very straight-forward and works well, even for novice users.

From an overall standpoint we highly recommend the PLANon RC800 Pen Scanner, it is an absolutely terrific purchase for those on the go who may want a scanner with them on business, at school, etc. This replaces the need to go running to a copy machine every time you need something for later in the day and can’t take it with you. For the price point it is set at, $299, this really is a tremendous gadget and a good buy for those on the go.

Final Score: 8.5 dbTechno Recommended!
