The new telescope blasted off on top of a Delta 2 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The launch took place at 12:05 p.m. EDT on Wednesday.

The five-ton GLAST is now headed for orbit around 350 miles above the Earth.
