Washington (dbTechno) – Intel has managed to strike a deal with Portugal, who plans to buy 500,000 Classmate PCs for the upcoming school year to help students.
The idea behind the purchase is to get more computers into the hands of children who are in school.
This is the biggest deal to date for the low-cost Intel laptops, which are competing with the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) company.
The deal is being called the Magellan Initiative, as the plan is to distribute the Classmate PCs to elementary school children in the country.
The announcement came on Wednesday at a meeting between Intel Chairman Craig Barrett, as well as the Prime Minister of Portugal, Jose Socrates.
There were no financial terms of the deal disclosed to the public.
