MLB Power Pros 2008
Nintendo Wii Review
Publisher: 2K Sports
Developer: Konami
Released: July 28, 2008
To make it quite clear, we were quite excited to hear that 2K Sports was going to publish yet another release of MLB Power Pros this year on the Nintendo Wii, for the simple fact that last year’s game set up such a great foundation for future games to come. Thankfully, MLB Power Pros 2008 does not disappoint, as it has hit a home run!
The Power Pros series has been around for two decades in Japan, and has finally been brought over to the U.S. as MLB Power Pros 2008 thanks to Konami and 2K Sports.
Last year, MLB Power Pros proved quite fun on the Wii, as well as on the PS2, acting as a great alternative with a very unique visual look. This year, it is back for more.
To be quite honest, when you first pick up and play MLB Power Pros 2008, you will realize, if you played last year’s game, that not all that much as changes. This is because the basic formula from last year’s game has returned, with the same great controls, etc.
The game features some nice waggle controls, allowing gamers to pitch with the Wii Remote, and also supports the use of Mii characters which is a fantastic feature.
Just because the game seems like last year’s offering though does not mean that there are no upgrades, as there is plenty of new stuff here.
Some of the new additions revolve around adding things to the gameplay such as hot and cold zones for batters, as well as a brand new pitching mode which allows you to pitch far more accurately.
On top of that, there is also a new mode called MLB Life Mode, which allows you to play baseball, while having some RPG elements in the mix as well. You go through a 20-year major league career, using a real life player, or your own created character. You will have to go through challenges, build up relationships, and upgrade your player with practice, etc.
The mode is a great deal of fun, as it allows you to play as your character in key moments of games, similar to the Success Mode. Needless to say, this could be an entire game in itself.
Going beyond that, there is also quite a few other modes which have made a comeback, including the Home Run Derby, as well as the Season Mode. One area where MLB Power Pros 2008 is going to truly impress is in the amount of stats that the game keeps track of.
The stat-tracking is absolutely over the top as you will get an insane amount of stats as you can read up on your progression, how you are doing, etc. For those who want a full-out sim experience, Manager Mode puts you in the GM role doing salary negotiations, trades, create a player/team modes, etc.
Needless to say, MLB Power Pros 2008 is an absolutely stacked game which really will appeal to any kind of baseball gamer.
For those who want a full Wii experience, you have the option of using the Wii Remote to pitch and such. If you do not want to do so, you can use a Classic controller or GameCube controller.
The bottom line is that MLB Power Pros 2008 is the best of both worlds for baseball fans, providing an enjoyable arcade experience on one front with certain modes, as well as a full-out sim experience in other game modes.
The amount of content on here will easily have you playing this game until next year, as MLB Power Pros 2008 is arguably the best baseball game this year, and it is on the Nintendo Wii.
There are some lacking things which could surely be upgraded for next year, such as improved announcers, as well as the addition of online play.
If you own a Nintendo Wii and are a fan of sports games though, MLB Power Pros 2008 is an absolute must-buy!
Graphics: 8.0 The graphics are very colorful and the animations are top-notch, a great looking game.
Audio: 8.0 The announcing could be improved, but the sound effects are well-implemented.
Gameplay: 9.0 The game controls great as you have plenty of options and variations to adapt to the way you want to play.
Replay Value: 9.0 There are more than enough game modes here to make this arguably the deepest sports game of the year, tons of different modes to take part in with hours upon hours of fun.
Final Score: 8.7
