Ferrari Challenge
Wii Review
Publisher: Eutechnyx
Developer: System 3 Arcade Software
The Nintendo Wii really has not had much in terms of a AAA racing simulation experience. Actually, the best racer the system has to offer to date is still Mario Kart. With that said, Ferrari Challenge has made its way to the Nintendo Wii to try and fix that.
The game has its biggest issue with the actual controls of the game, as the Wii is always meant to be a console for less serious racing style games. The Wii is always seen as a fun console, and an inventive one. So to say that a technical racing sim would work on it is a hard thing to prove.
The controls are done by either the Wii Remote, or with the remote and nunchuk. To be honest, I was not a fan of either of the controls. The big bummer was you cannot use the GameCube controller either.
For a simulation game, and one with a great physics engine and such like this, the controls have a rough time in terms of actually allowing you to be technical.
This game, as expected is all about the Ferrari cars, as you will be driving a variety of different types of cars such as the Ferrari F430, the Ferrari F50, FXX, and more.
The game is headed up by the main Challenge mode, which will have you racing through the Ferrari Challenge championship series. Each race is pretty lengthy, and will have you playing a series of events to try and progress to win it all.
There are 16 international circuits for you t choose from, with downloadable content to come according to the publisher. There is plenty here, as you can even have Ferrari cars and cards that you can trade online.
The game looks fairly strong on the Nintendo Wii, as there are good car models, little added details, fluidity, and more.
The only thing the game is really lacking, beyond the controls, is that added spark that a racer needs to have. You got this with Gran Turismo in how you upgrade your cars and such, and in Burnout with the amazing sense of speed. Ferrari Challenge is simply missing that little extra something.
Graphics: 7.0 The game looks good on the Wii, more like a high-def PS3 game.
Audio: 7.0 Good sound effects, bad soundtrack.
Gameplay: 5.0 The controls just do not work on the Wii, you simply can’t be precise enough.
Replay Value: 6.0 The controls will keep you from getting into it unfortunately.
Final Score: 6.0
