Far Cry 2
Xbox 360 Review
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Players: 1-16
When the original Far Cry released on the PC, it was received with a great deal of hype and praise, as was the next release of Far Cry Instincts on the Xbox. Now, moving forward, we are presented with Far Cry 2, which was developed by Ubisoft and releases day and date on the Xbox 360 and PS3 with the PC version.
Far Cry 2 is a massive game, that has to be put out there right from the start. If you think you are getting into a linear straight-forward first-person shooter then you are in the wrong place.
Far Cry 2 is huge, as there is an incredible amount of free-roaming open-world terrain that you can go check out. Have no fears though, there is a great in-game GPS system to help you navigate.
There are plenty of other very interesting things about how this game is set up, such as the fact that there is no inventory. You get your trust machete, sidearm, primary weapon, and special weapon.
There are plenty of nice weaponry here with all kinds of stuff such as flamethrowers, rocket launchers, shotguns, sniper riles, and more for you to fool around with.
The gameplay itself allows you to do a variety of things, as you can do all types of weapon vendor quests which will have you going after certain things, as well as other quests you get from buddies in the game. Other interesting things in the game will have you going for medicine for diseases, and all kinds of other unique stuff.
The main quests in the game are very enjoyable and interesting as you will be going into some crazy situations to say the least. They do get a bit repetitive though the more that you do. The only saving grace to this is the open-world style, as you have so many options of different things to do that you really can’t get bored.
The game stays fresh with plenty of unique stuff that you get to do, such as even driving around different vehicles in the game such as boats, cars, trucks, etc.
Another really impressive aspect of the game is the strong enemy AI, which is going to force you to play very smart throughout. They will require you to hide and move around in meticulous ways so that you are not seen. The enemies you face will be ready for you when you are out in the open, and also have the ability to avoid oncoming gunfire. Needless to say, if you play dumb, they will smoke you.
Not only is it massive, the game looks great running on the Dunia engine, as there are virtually no load times, only between big chapters and in safe houses and such. Beyond that this is one seamless game once you get into the actual hard action.
The visuals are extremely impressive here as you get some amazing effects that blast off with all of the high-octane in-your-face action sequences. On top of that, the animatiosn and such with all of the explosions are quite impressive. The only downside to the visuals is that the frame rate will dip a bit at times, and character models are a bit bland.
As for the audio, the game features some extremely realistic gun sound effects and a great musical score. The voice acting on the other hand could have been a bit stronger.
The final thing I am going to talk about here is the multi-player aspect of Far Cry 2, which is not quite as expansive as the single-player game. You get your standard assortment of modes with deathmatch, team deathmatch, CTF, among other modes. These can be a lot of fun and do work quite well, they just lack innovation to be quite honest.
The best aspect of the multi-player is the included map editor, which once you learn is very usable and will allow you to set up all different types of maps with great ease. You can create, use, and share these maps with the world through the online community.
Far Cry 2 is a real gem of a shooter due to the fact that it is so innovative and different than your typical Call of Duty release or something of that nature. Far Cry 2 takes a lot of risks with its open-world atmosphere, and it pays off. This is definitely a must-buy for shooter fans this holiday season!
Graphics: 8.8 The game looks great with a huge world, and some awesome effects. Some framerate issues hamper things though.
Audio: 8.8 The voice acting could have been a bit better, sound effects and musical score are great though!
Gameplay: 9.0 Far Cry 2 plays great, and is a fantastic shooter to control.
Replay Value: 9.2 A massive game with the whole open-world set-up, multi-player and much more!
Final Score: 8.9
