The Prince of Persia franchise has been one of those games that has managed to be highly-successful from generation to generation. The game was a huge success back when it was in its 2D form, and also had a great run on the PS2 and original Xbox. The series has now made the move to the next-gen with the release of Prince of Persia, and needless to say, this is definitely a game of the year candidate.
Prince of Persia on the Xbox 360 is an absolute achievement on so many levels, as the game has an artistic presentation that will simply blow you away from the second you step into its world.
To be honest, I have never seen anything that looks like Prince of Persia does on the Xbox 360. The way in which the art style was done here is something else, and shows that the developers definitely wanted to be creative rather than going for an all-out realistic approach. The way in which the worlds are created with the colors, the fluidity of everything, etc. will truly have you in awe of what you are seeing. This is one of the best looking Xbox 360 games to date hands-down.
The sound presentation for Prince of Persia is also very well-done as the music and sound effects fit the entire style of the game perfectly. The manage to stay fresh throughout the game and sound great on a home theater system.
The voice-overs for the main character here though are a hit-or-miss, as the developers clearly tried to make his quotes and such entertaining. Some of the lines work, while others fall flat. The personality of the main character here though definitely shines through, and the effort is fully-appreciated.
The highlight of Prince of Persia on the Xbox 360 is the way in which the game controls. The fantastic thing about this experience is that it is the type of game that both casual gamers and hardcore gamers can really get into.
If you are a casual gamer, you are not going to have any trouble doing all of the wall-jumps, hanging, and all of the acrobatic stuff that Prince of Persia games are known for. For the hardcore gamers though, the level of depth in the controls with the battle system and such is done in a way that will appeal to you as well, as there is plenty of depth with the varied attacks and such you can pull off.
The battle system is very well-done as you are thrown into these fights where you can pull off acrobatic attacks, blocks, and all different types of combinations that will really have your imagination working at full-force.
The boss battles and such are pretty straight-forward but highly impressive thanks to the artistic style and the environments. They each have a health bar and you have to pretty much get by their defenses to kill them.
The game will have you going through each of these areas as you try to save the world. The world falls into the hands of evil after you and Princess Elika unleash the evil without meaning to.
Needless to say, the entire game and how it plays out, with the worlds going from dark and gloomy to bright and colorful after you have won them back is truly amazing.
There is a lot of magic in this game as well which plays a major role in all aspects of it, as the magical Elika will grab you if you fall from things, will allow for magic attack sto be used, etc.
The structure of the game is set-up in such a way that you can pretty much go through it any way you please. You go through the various areas of the game at your own pace, giving it an open-world feel of sorts. You will have the need to go back to these areas as well to collect energy orbs for powers, new areas, etc.
The only downside I found with Prince of Persia is that once you do play through the entire thing, the motivation to go back and do it again is really not there as the game gives you no reason to play through it again. You may want to just for the heck of it due to how much fun it is, but some added replay value would have been nice.
Prince of Persia is one of the best games of the year on the Xbox 360 hands down as it is a true achievement and a fantastic gaming experience from start to finish. Gamers, whether they are novice or experts, will fall in love with the worlds, the artistic feel, and that addictive gameplay Prince of Persia is known for. This is a beautifully done game and one which you simply cannot miss on the Xbox 360!
Graphics: 9.5 One of the best-looking games on the Xbox 360, absolutely beautiful worlds.
Audio: 8.5 Some of the voice-work contains a few cheesy lines, but great stuff for the most part!
Gameplay: 9.2 The highlight of the game, very approachable to gamers of all skill levels and a blast to play!
Replay Value: 8.5 Not much in terms of reasons to go back for more, but the main game has a lot of depth to it and will take awhile to finish.
Final Score: 9.2
