Lumines was the reason why I purchased a Sony PSP at launch, and the same reason why I sometimes still cannot put it down. Lumines Supernova marks the release of the series on the Sony PS3, and the puzzle game is as addictive as ever.
Lumines Supernova brings the hit puzzle game to the Sony PS3 in the form of a PlayStation Network game with the price tag of $14.99.
The game is a bit hard to explain, but I like to think of Lumines as Tetris, only much more colorful, harder, and with superior music.
You are presented with these squares which have four blocks in each of the squares. You have to guide these falling squares to stack on each other to create 4 of the same color. So you could have two squares, with two colors in each square, and have to match them up.
You can create a chain with these, use various combos, special blocks, and a variety of other things. Needless to say, if you are a fan of Tetris and puzzle games such as that, you will get addicted to this, it is that damn good!
The gameplay mechanics have not changed one bit thankfully, as we are presented another puzzle game with some very colorful levels, as well as some fantastic tunes to go along with it.
You get the basic and advanced challenge modes in the game, as well as a free play mode, time attack modes, and tons of missions to check out.
Beyond that, we also have two unique new game modes that I personally have not seen before, Dig Down and Sequencer. These are a lot of fun as Dig Down is a challenge mode of sorts with 20-levels, while Sequencer lets you create your own Lumines music mix.
In terms of lasting appeal, the only unfortunate thing here is that there is no ability to play with people online. Local multi-player is offered though thankfully. There is, however, Trophy support as well as plenty of things you will need to unlock.
Lumines Supernova is a fantastic release for PS3 users and one that they are going to enjoy a great deal. This is a puzzle game that you are not going to forget, and one that you will not be able to put down. If you are looking for a good puzzle game on the PS3, this is the best $14.99 you can spend.
Graphics: 8.0 Extremely colorful, always impressive.
Audio: 8.5 The music is always a highlight of Lumines, and that stands true once again for this version.
Gameplay: 8.5 Once you get the hang of it, this is one of the most addictive puzzle games you will ever play.
Replay Value: 8.0 Plenty to play and unlock, the lack of online play is disappointing though.
Final Score: 8.4
