WWE Starrcade The Essential Collection
DVD Review
WWE Home Video
Released: January 13, 2009
WWE Home Video is set to release Starrcade The Essential Collection on a three-disc DVD set, featuring both a documentary as well as a set of fantastic and historic matches.
Starrcade was always a huge event, starting out with NWA and the moving forward to WCW. With the end of WCW though came the end of Starrcade, so it is great to see WWE Home Video keep the event alive by releasing this release.
The three-disc DVD set includes both a documentary as well as a set of the greatest matches from the show.
The documentary was a lot of fun and touches on a great deal of the history behind the event, focusing on the big performers from the show, and featuring commentary from a lot of them.
Many of the big names featured include Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, Road Warrior Animal, and others.
The documentary itself is highly-entertaining as it goes from the origins of the show, its growth, its legacy, etc. Some of the chapters focus on the history of the show, while some move to the more recent stuff with the Goldberg era, Eric Bischoff, and others.
After you are done with the great documentary, you are then presented with a countdown of the greatest 25 matches in the history of Starrcade, presented by Gene Okerlund, Jim Ross, Tully Blanchard, and others.
This is an absolutely fantastic DVD release for any wrestling fan as the documentary is very well-done, and the matches themselves are also highly-entertaining to watch over and over. The matches selected are great and touch-base on a lot of the older matches, and the new stuff.
As a wrestling fan for many years, I always knew Starrcade was a huge event. For newer fans though who may not have known that Starrcade was once compared to WrestleMania, this is a great way to learn wrestling history. For wrestling fans, this release is highly-recommended!
Content: 8.9 The documentary is fantastic, and the included matches are varied nicely to appeal to a wide array of fans.
Video: 8.0 The video quality depends on which matches and such you watch, overall everything is presented well though.
Audio: 8.0 Considering the age of some of the clips, it sounds very clear.
Extras: N/A You could consider the 25 matches as all extras, tons of content overall!
Final Score: 8.5
