Boston (DbTechNo) – It is being reported that Toshiba will begin manufacturing devices that will be able to play blu-ray discs.

Blu-ray is the most popular format of discs when it comes to big name electronics manufacturers, but up until now Toshiba have stayed away from making them.

The format was introduced by Sony, and is a fan of millions, including those with PS3s who can play blu-ray discs on their concels.

With the largest 4 movie studios in the world backing HD-DVD format, it was only a matter of time before Toshiba came onboard.

The company will begin creating single blu-ray players as well as drives for computers.

“In light of recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers alike, Toshiba has decided to join the BDA,” the Japanese firm said in a statement.

They hope that they will be ready to ship their products at the end of 2009.
