Boston (DbTechNo) – Thanks to a Rhode Island federal judge Microsoft will not have to pay out more than 388 million dollars because of a patent violation.
The company had been sued back in 2003 by Uniloc, who claimed that their anti-piracy software was infringed upon by Microsoft in the development of one of their own products.
“We are pleased that the court has vacated the jury verdict and entered judgment in favor of Microsoft,” said Kevin Kutz, a Microsoft spokesman.
Nah really? Microsoft dodged a huge bullet here, as if they were forced to fork out the cash, it would’ve marked the largest pay out ever in a civil patent case.
Microsoft is not out of the woods yet though as they are also being hounded by a lawsuit filed against them by Canadian software maker I4i to the tune of 200 million bucks.
According to this suit, Microsoft infringed on an I4i software patent in the developing of certain aspects of their MSWord program.
Microsoft have made it very clear, that by being banned from selling MSWord in the US, their business would effectively be crippled, thus bringing the company to its knees.
