Boston (DbTechNo) – It now appears that crashing rockets into the moon was actually successful as the experiment shows that there may indeed be ice beneath the surface.
The experiment went down on October 9th, and featured 2 rockets aimed directly at the moon and running into it.
NASA crashed 2 rockets into the moon and then measured the height of the resulting dust plume that rose as a result of the impact.
As the plume of lunar dust rose, NASA’s $79-million Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite flew throu it, measuring various levels of particles from the dust.
Variables such as the temperature of the dust contained inside the plume could tell scientists if indeed water lies beneath the moon’s surface.
“We are blown away by the data returned,” Tony Colaprete, the mission’s top scientist, said in a statement. ” The team is working hard on the analysis, and the data appear to be of very high quality.”
