It is being reported that the man who scooped up a prototype iPhone left on a barstool by an Apple employee does actually have a name, Brian Hogan.
Hogan picked up the phone and even asked around if it belonged to anybody before taking it home with him for the night.
Only when he was home did he realize what he actually had in his possession, not an iPhone 3G but a prototype 4G, not released on the US market.
Apple were not very pleased with the 21-year-old, who upon finding out what he had, was no longer as willing to return it, even after it was remotely wiped of any data.
He eventually began shopping it around to the highest buyer, and eventually sold it to gadget site Gizmodo for $5,000.
“He regrets his mistake in not doing more to return the phone,” said an email from his lawyer,
“Even though he did obtain some compensation from Gizmodo, Brian thought that it was so that they could review the phone. Brian believed and Gizmodo emphasized to him that there was nothing wrong in sharing the phone with the tech press.”
“Brian has been working part time at a Church run community center where he was teaching swimming to kids age 3 to 10. He also has taught English in China to college students and volunteered at a Chinese orphanage in 2009 while enrolled in a study abroad program through college. In that same year, Brian volunteered in Vietnam to plant a friendship garden.
He also volunteers to assist his aunt and sister with fund-raising for their work to provide medical care to orphans in Kenya.”
