Today is Quit Facebook Day in which many users of the popular social networking web site will be deleting their profiles for good. The move by thousands to deactivate their accounts is because of recent privacy issues dealing with Facebook and the inability of the company to protect user data.
The most recent privacy glitch Facebook was a part of was a big one to say the least, as the private information of more than 400,000 people was public knowledge to anybody who cared enough to notice. Unfriended users had access to the private info of other Facebook users, including friend lists, status updates etc. Also it was revealed that Facebook has been passing on personal information to third party advertisers, a direct violation of their very own terms of service in their privacy policy.
According to stats found on the official Quit Facebook Day Website more than 26,000 users have signed up to delete their accounts today, and hundreds more are signing up each minute. Founder Matthew Milan says: “The cumulative effects of what Facebook does now will not play out well in the future, and we care deeply about the future of the web as an open, safe and human place,” according to QuitFacebookDay.com. “We just can’t see Facebook’s current direction being aligned with any positive future for the web, so we’re leaving.”
