Aquarium Rescues Sea Turtle Weighing 655 Pounds

Last Wednesday, a 655 pound leatherback sea turtle was found on a mud flat just off Cape Cod, reports NBC.

According to WCVB, finding a live sea turtle on a Massachusetts beach is extremely rare. In the last 40 years, only 5 live leatherback sea turtles have been rescued.

The sea turtle was discovered by Massachusetts Audubon Sanctuary staff members. The staff members worked to move the sea turtle to a nearby access road where staff members from the New England Aquarium rescued it.

Aquarium spokesman Tony LaCasse revealed the leatherback sea turtle was “near death” upon arriving at the newly built Marine Animal Care Center at the aquarium, according to reports from ABC

Yesterday, the New England Aquarium released the leatherback sea turtle into the Atlantic Ocean following treatment to stabilize the creature.

The staff at the aquarium are among the best trained marine biologists in the United States.

The sea turtle will be able to migrate south for the winter rejoining other sea turtles.
