Utah Female Teacher Accused of Raping Girl Resigns
Courtney Jarrell, age 22, has resigned her position as the Riverton High School sophomore girls’ basketball coach and math instructor. Ms. Jarrell’s resignation comes amid allegations that she raped a 17-year-old girl from the school where she taught.
According to ABC News, Ms. Jarrell was arrested one month ago after being charged with two felony counts for “object rape” and “forcible sexual abuse”.
According to reports, between February and March of this year, Jarrell had illegal sexual activity with a 17-year-old girl who attends the school, according to charging documents. Prosecutors say the activity happened at Jarrell’s house.
The crimes are said to have occurred in her home. Ms. Jarrell has only been a faculty member at Riverton High School for eight months. Both parents and students are shocked over the allegations.
Presumably, Ms. Jarrell came to work at the school with high honors given that teaching positions in suburban Utah cities are very competitive, and openings usually go to the top students from universities with excellent teaching programs.
Ms. Jarrell said she resigned to focus her energy on her legal defense. She is expecting to plead “not guilty” to both charges. After just eight months on the job, her team had won a championship. Ms. Jarrell was well-liked by students who described her as being loved by “everyone”.
“Everybody loved her,” said student Kathryn Orchard. “My parents were even way shocked because my parents loved her too. They thought she was a great teacher.”
Her court date is set for May 16. If convicted, Ms. Jarrell would receive a prison sentence of five years at minimum and up to life at maximum.
