The referee then took a knife and stabbed the player to death, inciting spectators to riot and storm the field. The angry mob stoned the referee to death prior to beheading him and placing his head on a stick and positioning it for all to see in the middle of the soccer field.
Police officials are investigating the deaths of both men and report that one young man in his late 20s has already been arrested.
Maranhão Valter Costa, the Chief of Police in Santa Ines, in the north of Brazil where the incident occurred said that suspects were being questioned in the lynching:
“Reports of witnesses have indicated some people that were in place at the time of the fact. We will identify and hold accountable all those involved. A crime will never justify another. Actions like this do not collaborate with the legality of a state law.”
Police officials say that they will not rest until all individuals involved in decapitating the referee are arrested and charged, saying that his murderous actions did not justify the crowd’s revenge.
The horrifying incident of the decapitated referee comes only weeks after a teenaged Utah soccer player punched and injured a referee who had penalized him during a match. The 46-year-old official, Richard Portillio, died May 5 after a seven-day coma. The unnamed player, 17, is in jail on $100,000 bond and may be tried as an adult.
Police have only one suspect in custody in the Sao Paulo crime.
