On May 1, 2012 Aimee Copeland cut her leg during a zip line accident. On May 4, 2012 Aimee was battling to survive due to a rare flesh-eating bacterium, Necrotizing Fasciitis. The bacteria progressed rapidly causing doctors to amputate Aimee’s left leg, right foot and both hands before it spread even further.
Aimee Copeland has been on life support since early May. Memorial Weekend was the beginning of recuperation for Aimee. This past weekend Aimee breathed on her own for the first time; and spoke. Aimee is taking what happened to her like a trooper, smiling and laughing despite her predicament.
Aimee is not the only victim of the bacteria over the course of the last few weeks. Two more victims, one in Georgia and another in South Carolina have been reported. Aimee’s family has made her case more publicized with recent blog posts for prayers and support.
