Chinese Man Finds Giant Earthworm

The night crawler or earthworm found by most people in inhabited areas of northern geographic regions such as the United States, Europe and Asia has a body that commonly expands to less than 10 inches in length.

In China a “giant” earthworm recently appeared in an inhabited area that measured between 19 and 20 inches (1-foot 7 to 8 inches).

Li Zhiwei, who works for the Binchuan County, Yunnan Province Forestry Bureau, discovered the earthworm in a rain gutter at his home while drying dates outside.

He recently told the media that he saw it out of the corner of his eye and at first believed it was a snake. He has since decided to keep it and it has become both a local and international attraction.

“It looked like a snake, I looked carefully and found it was actually a huge earthworm,” said Li, who added that he decided to keep the worm and raise it in his backyard.

Many species of earthworms around the world grow and expand to even greater lengths with some “Giant” species measuring up to 22 feet.
