Double Amputee in Wheelchair Shot to Death By Police Officer
Recently, a Houston police officer fatally shot a double amputee confined to a wheelchair. The incident occurred at a personal care home and involved two officers, according to reports.
Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva says the suspect was waving a silver pen at the officers before being shot. At the time, the officer did not know what the metal object was that the man was waving, Silva said.
According to the officer, he shot the victim to protect himself and his partner from an unidentified but dangerous object.
“Fearing for his partner’s safety and his own safety, he discharged his weapon,” Silva told The Associated Press.
This incident is bringing forth calls for better police training in Houston.
The double amputee in question holds a history of mental illness and health problems. Unfortunately, numerous recent shootings in Houston have people fearing for their safety. Two specific incidents have involved innocent people being shot by officers worried about their own safety.
There are people on both sides of the argument praising and criticizing the Houston Police Department.
In the end, both sides will continue to debate whether this incident could have been avoided under different circumstances.
