Pilot Suspended After Landing Passenger Jet at Wrong Airport

Talk about a bad sense of direction!

The pilot of a Sriwrijaya Air passenger airliner was suspended after landing his fully loaded plane about 12 km away from his original destination.

All 96 passengers and six crew members were unharmed, but a bit surprised and frustrated that once the plane touched down they were not at all where they were expecting to be.

The pilot landed the Indonesian jet at Tabing Air Force Base rather than where he was supposed to land at Minangkabau International Airport in Padang.

Although the pilot was said to be foreign born, airline officials did not reveal his identity.

The plane was scheduled to fly from Medan, Jakarta to the city of Padang and the pilot is now under investigation for committing what airline authorities say was a serious safety error.

The flight could have resulted in tragedy by striking another aircraft in flight by being seriously off course.
