Why Was Diane Sawyer Slurring During Election Night Coverage?
Diane Sawyer, “ABC World News” anchor and highly respected newswoman, has drawn some attention due to uncharacteristic behavior during Tuesday night’s election coverage. Throughout the broadcast, Sawyer slurred her words, laughed, and otherwise behaved unlike her usual, poised self.
Many on twitter and social media have already accused the legendary news anchor of being drunk on air but Sawyer insists she was merely exhausted.
“Diane Sawyer is drunk. on america. No, really, I think she is drunk,” said one Twitter user.
“And Diane Sawyer declares tonight’s winner is… chardonnay!” another tweeted.
Singer Josh Groban tweeted, “I’ll have what Diane Sawyer is having.” Others on twitter made similar comments such as one user who said: “And Diane Sawyer announces tonight’s winner is…Chardonnay!”
Other news organization quickly picked up the story and offereed their own take.
USA Today reporter Ann Oldenburg wrote: “She somewhat slurred her words at times, seemed to ramble at times, and wasn’t the buttoned-up news anchor we’ve come to know”.
US entertainment news site Gawker went further: “She slurred every other word, rambled about the lack of music, and asked a correspondent if the exclamation point in the Obama slogan represented the direction he truly wanted to go with his presidency. What more proof do you need?”
The clip most talked about showed Sawyer calling excitedly for music, saying: “Okay, I wanna – can we have our music, because this is another big one here. Minnesota, we’re ready to project Minnesota, right now. Well, tonight we know that President Orama – Obama – has won Minnesota.”
A source in the station claimed that Sawyer was tired from being up for several days and nights covering Hurricane Sandy and preparing for the election broadcast.
“Diane’s been up for days and she’s had many sleepless nights. She was covering the hurricane and then preparing for the election broadcast,” the representative told the Daily Mail.
Tuesday evening was not the first time Diane Sawyer has appeared in the news, rather than reporting it, however. In the 2009 coverage of Barack Obama’s inauguration, Sawyer also appeared tipsy and representatives announced she was only exhausted.
