Stranger Picks Up Family’s $211 Bill As Random Act Of Kindness

Anonymous Stranger Pays Family’s $211 Grocery Bill

Altoona, Iowa resident Ruby Modlin and her family got quite a surprise at the cash register when they went to pay their grocery bill recently at the nearby Walmart. A man who was a complete stranger to them quickly stepped in front of Modlin’s husband before he could pay and swiped his own credit card, gifting the family with their $211 order.

Modlin says she saw the man earlier in the store and that he seemed to be following her, but she didn’t recognize him, reports KCCI.com.

“I kept noticing this man, and I’d smile at him,” Modlin tells the station.

The man insisted on paying for the Modlin family’s order, simply handing them the paid receipt with a wish for a “Merry Christmas” and explaining that he and his family wanted to do a random act of kindness for the holidays and chose the Modlins after coming in to the Walmart.

“I said, ‘What?’ He said, ‘I’m paying for this.’ I said, ‘No, you’re not.’ He said, ‘Yes, I am,’” Modlin said.

The surprise payment was a real blessing for the Modlins, since Mrs. Modlin has had high medical expenses this year.

“He said, ‘That’s my daughter and wife over there. We just wanted to come out and do something nice for somebody, and we picked you guys,’” Modlin said.

Modlin said she just tood there in shock.

“I was still standing there in shock. We were too busy crying, and the register people were smiling,” Modlin said.
