Kinkajou captured in Texas
Wise County, Texas, Animal Control officers were surprised on Tuesday when they received reports from residents about a “monkey” on a roof. What the callers had actually seen was a kinkajou, a small nocturnal mammal native to South America sporting an adorable face and razor-sharp teeth. A deputy was bitten through his puncture-proof gloves while responding to the call.
The kinkajou is more closely related to a raccoon than a primate. Proof positive of this relation to the mischievous raccoon: the kinkajou escaped its cage soon after being brought in. Rather than attempting to escape, it proceeded to harass a group of cats.
Officers suspect that the ill-tempered exotic animal was a pet that was either turned loose or escaped. The kinkajou, nicknamed “Rat” by the Animal Control officers, has been quarantined and is being observed for rabies. The bitten deputy was treated for three puncture wounds on his hand.
